A hospital will declare a temporary inability to care for patients if it does not have sufficient room, equipment or staff to adequately care for additional patients. This serves as a request that ambulances divert transport to an alternate facility, if possible. When on diversion, the hospital is not "closed." The hospital will still accept unstable prehospital patients and walk-in patients.
This status name varies from system to system. Common names include Hospital Saturation or Hospital Diversion. Medics will commonly say, "the hospital is on sat," or "on divert."
