The Oak Island Fire and Rescue Department is a combination department that consists of volunteer and career personnel. The Department responsibilities include: fire suppression, fire protection of life and property, response to medical emergencies, and response to other public health, safety and welfare conditions that threaten the Oak Island community. The Department is also involved in the community with fire protection pre-planning activities and community education.

Our response district includes approximately 9 square miles of island, which includes some 8 miles of beaches and totals 12.6 miles in length and averages 1 mile across, making it Brunswick County’s largest barrier island and the largest coastal town in North Carolina. Oak Island has a permanent population of 7,300 by the 2000 census and our tourist population swells to 35 to 40,000 during the summer season.

The insurance fire protection rating for the Town of Oak Island is “5”. This is for all areas within the town limits. This rating was assigned after a 2001 “Response Rating Survey” by the North Carolina Department of Insurance. This rating was achieved based on many factors such as water supply, communications, and training. Overall, our rating would not be this good if not for the dedication and support of the Town, and the members of both Oak Island and Yaupon Beach Volunteer Fire Department.

Our main station is located at 101 East Oak Island Drive. We have a substation located at 206 SE 46th. Street. Our neighboring Yaupon Beach Volunteer Fire Department is located at 8700 East Oak Island, and they provide full service fire protection to the town by contract.
