Virtua Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is the primary ALS provider for all of Camden County and all but Bass River Township and Washington Township of Burlington County. The MICU responds to approximately 50,000 dispatches with nine full-time medic units, two in service 18 hours, and one in service 12 hours per day. Virtua also staffs SouthStar, which is one of two aeromedical units that are operated by the New Jersey State Police.

History

The Virtua MICU was formed after the merging of West Jersey Health System and the Memorial Health Alliance in 1998. Both health systems operated MICUs and were both of the original nine MICU demonstration projects that began operation in the late 1970s. At one point Virtua had provided primary coverage of Atlantic and Cape May Counties (both counties are now covered by AtlantiCare). Virtua had also been the demonstration project for Rapid Sequence Intubation in New Jersey.

Dispatch

Dispatch is based on triage of callers by county dispatchers according to state guidelines; however, medic units may be requested or cancelled by BLS. At present there are no guideline for the request or cancellation of medic units by BLS crews. MICU paramedics may triage patients to BLS.
